"Discover Winning Poker Hands And How To Pick Them"
First the term winning poker hands is somewhat of a misunderstood and misused one.
There are no specific poker hands that fall under the umbrella of this term.
WHY? Because any poker hand that you start with can potentially win the pot (no matter how bad of a hand it is!)
I’ve seen the starting hand 9-2 off-suit (considered a horrible starting hand) win large pots and A-A conversely lose even larger pots.
Plus it doesn’t matter which game you’re playing. Whether its pineapple, badugi or razz the best starting hand doesn’t ALWAYS win the pot.
In razz its possible for the starting hand A-2-3 to lose to the starting hand 9-4-3. There is really no guarantees when it comes to starting hands. The only real winning poker hand is the one that wins the pot!
So for me to list a bunch of poker hands for you to remember and then tell you “these are winning poker hands they win the pot every time“ is not only absurd and time consuming but untruthful.
So what the heck am reading this page for you ask?
There may be no solid cut and dry method on picking a winning poker hands (cause they can all be winners) but there are hands that have a higher probability of winning over others.
That’s what every poker game is about probabilities not possibility.
Any poker hand has possibility but your decision to play a poker hand should be based on its probability of winning the pot.
Listing starting hands for every poker game wont help you out much either. Because poker is not only about probability but its also about situations.
We’ll go over some guidelines to help you decide if that poker hand will win the pot or not. We’ll also go over them for games played for both high and low.
In poker games played for high hands you’ll want to stick to the BIG cards and BIG pairs rule.
This takes some discipline.
Basically since high hands get the cheese that’s what you want to stick to is cards that MAKE high hands.
A pair of jacks and higher can be played from pretty much any position. A pair of tens can even be played IF you’re in late position.
With big cards try to play them in middle and late positions.
Remember that big cards are not a solid hand and for you to CONTINUE playing them during a hand you’ll have to hit a flop. In draw games you’ll have to make your hand early on and in stud games you’ll also need to make your hand early.
Also lets say your playing texas hold-em. Your in late position and look down at Q-J suited a nice hand to see. BUT the player under the gun (first seat clockwise from the big blind) RAISES!
Now you should ask yourself “is this player tight or loose, are they playing too many or not enough hands?”
If your answer is the player is as snug as a bug in a rug then consider your hand TRASH and muck it accordingly.
However if the player seems to be loose as a goose that Q-J may be good as gold and you’ll have to call the raise and see a flop.
Your ability to think in terms of the situation and your cards will get you playing better poker than most.
Poker games played where low hands win the pot is fairly easy to figure out if a hand will win the pot.
Since low hands win in low games stick to low cards.
There will be times when in a razz game you start with 6-3-2 and no one has a card showing lower than an eight but you lose the pot.
As long as you draw to only low cards you cant lose.
Here is a situation in which I would raise until I had no money left.
Lets say you start with (A-2)-3 in razz and your opponent has (X-X)-2 showing. Now we know that THE BEST our opponent could have is (A-3)-2 a tie which is improbable. So more than likely you have your opponent beat and should seek to get as much money from them as possible.
Any time your cards are a favorite probability wise get as much money in the pot as you can and eventually you’ll be a winner.
Good luck!
