"Stud Poker Games: What To Know Before You Play"
Stud poker games are any poker game where players use their own cards to make the best five card poker hand. There is no drawing for new cards or board cards to use. You play the cards you’re dealt.
Most games like 7 card stud, seven card stud hi lo, razz poker and no peaky stud you’ll get dealt a TOTAL of seven cards.
Five card stud needs no explanation (hint: you get FIVE!)
Stud games are found both in live play and online poker played from micro limits to high stakes.
Though its easier to play online as most live poker rooms don’t offer stud games.
In live play horse poker is the most common place to play stud games.
They’re played in cash poker games and tournament poker.
Most stud games are played in a limit poker structure. Pot limit poker and no-limit stud games are few and far between. With the right mix of players anything is possible though.
In ALL stud games players post antes instead of blinds. The ante is as close to 10% (depending on the poker room) of the big bet for the game.
A $5-$10 limit 7 card stud game will have an ante of $1.
In the same game played for $4-$8 stakes the ante is still $1. $0.50 is too little and $1.50 too much, so $1 is a happy medium.
In online poker rooms the ante is ALWAYS 10%.
This is covered on stud poker rules page.
All stud games except no peaky stud (which I’ll go over on that page) have a bring in of about 1/3rd to ½ the size of the small bet. In a $4-$8 the bring in is $2. Players can either call the $2 or complete the bet to $4 which is the first raise.
In games played for high hands the player with the lowest up-card brings in the bet.
Games played for low hands have the highest up-card bringing in the bet.
The bring ins purpose is to create action. If players don’t at least call the bring in, the player who brought in the bet wins the antes. So it makes players go after the antes and bring in.
Otherwise stud games would be a bore!
