"Gain Pineapple Poker Confidence"
What makes pineapple poker unique? You get dealt THREE cards!
This game is in the community card games family. It’s a close relative to texas hold-em.
Crazy pineapple and lazy pineapple are spawns of this game.
One of your three cards is discarded after the pre-flop betting round, before the flop. It’s like texas hold-em, except you choose the two best cards. Or fold all three.
Like the origins of most poker games, pineapple pokers’ is speculative.
My theory is a dealer was dealing texas hold-em and dealt the small and big blind three cards. Instead of declaring a misdeal, someone said, “Deal everyone three cards!”, and so the game was invented.
That’s my folkloric contribution to the game anyways.
It’s accurate to say the game was invented AFTER texas hold-em. Since Texas is texas hold-em’s birthplace, it’s probably also pineapple pokers’.
This could be argued all day, as the exact who, when, and where’s of the game are unknown.
What we do know is it’s never had much “main stream” popularity.
We also know how the game is played.
Once the shuffling procedure is done, the first player on the button’s left posts the small blind. The player to the small blinds left posts the big blind.
Now that that’s done, the deal can begin.
The deal begins at the small blind and goes clockwise around the table. Each player gets one card at a time until they all have THREE.
Next is the pre-flop betting round. All players can either...
· Raise
· Call
· Or fold
When the pre-flop betting round is complete, ALL PLAYERS WITH CARDS MUST DISCARD ONE OF THEIR THREE CARDS.
The discard of one of your three cards is very important. If you have three cards at anytime after the flop, your cards are dead, plus you lose any money that you’ve put in the pot!
Once all players have discarded, the flop gets dealt.
The flop betting round follows the flop.
Then the turn card is dealt.
A turn betting round happens after the turn.
A fifth card, the river, is dealt. Followed by a river betting round. Once the river betting round is complete, players with cards turn them face up. The person with the best five-card hand wins the pot!
Recap of how to play...
· Each player receives three cards
· Pre-flop betting round
· Players discard one of their three cards
· Flop is dealt, flop betting round
· Turn is dealt, turn betting round
· River is dealt, river betting round
· Showdown! Best hand wins
Where can you play pineapple poker?
Poker rooms play any game, IF they have enough players for the game (at least five players).
That being said, this game isn’t a staple in poker rooms. The basic play of the game is so close to texas hold-em, they figure “why not just play texas hold-em instead?”
If you find a rare pineapple poker game, tackle the opportunity to play.
A home game is the most likely place to play.
If you’re ITCHING to play, start your own home game!
Pinapple poker strategies
Aggressive play is a winning style. Raise/bet when you feel you have the best hand. This style of play gives YOU two ways to win: one with your bet and the other with your cards.
Playing this style doubles your chances of winning.
Since the flop, turn, and river are played with two cards, you can play the same hands in pineapple that you would in texas hold-em. In early positions play BIG cards, in late positions play connected cards and smaller pairs.
Good luck!
