No peaky stud strategies!
How can there be no peaky stud strategies when you don't even get to look at your cards? I know that at first glance this looks like a game of pure luck, that’s what you want your opponents to think, but you will know better. It's a combination of knowing when and how much to bet and also paying attention to the cards that are already in play, giving you a better idea of what cards you hold.
I was playing in a home game once with six other people besides myself. Everyone had flipped up almost all of there cards except for two or three people, they still had a card or two left to flip up, while I had only flipped up one of my cards so far
and still had six cards left to flip up. It was my turn to act and I decided to bet, to my opponents this may have looked odd, I hadn't seen but one of my whole cards, but I had seen everyone else’s and noticed that out of all their cards there were only twohearts out and I held one of them, so where were the rest of the hearts? In my hand! Three or four players called my bet and I turned up the rest of my cards to reveal a straight flush in hearts, I bet again and everyone folded. The point of the story
is not that I made a straight flush, even though that was pretty amazing, the point is that without even looking at my own cards I knew I had a flush because those cards were not already out, and it could beat my opponents hands. Paying attention to all
cards that your opponents flip up will help you make better decisions about the cards you might hold.
Another one of your no peaky stud strategies should be when you bet. If you flip up a big pair and it has everyone beat, you should bet. Don't let someone catch up for free and beat you, when you could have bet and made them fold their hand, or at least pay to beat your hand. Also if you have flipped up a big pair and someone bets into you and you have them beat you should raise them, unless you have flipped up all your cards and is all you have is one pair and they have four cards left to flip up, and their cards are live, in this case you should use discretion and wait for a better situation to put your money in the pot.
I hope some of these strategies help you out, you probably won't get to play it that often as I’ve only found it played in home games, if you do get a chance play it, it's a fun game worth your time. Good luck!
